"NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN" WINS AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AWARD
Not in Front of the Children: "Indecency," Censorship, and the Innocence of Youth, by Free Expression Policy Project Director Marjorie Heins, was awarded this year’s Eli M. Oboler Award from the American Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Roundtable. Named for the Idaho librarian and author known as a champion of free expression, the award is presented for the best published work in the area of intellectual freedom. Not in Front of the Children is a comprehensive study of censorship that has been based on the assumption that minors must be protected from controversial or provocative art, information, and ideas. Heins said: "I wanted to write a book that would put the legal history and cultural politics of youth censorship in perspective, from the original 19th century obscenity laws to suppression of detective comics in the 1950s and Internet filters, v-chips, and attacks on popular music today. I can’t imagine a greater honor for this book than to be recognized by America’s librarians." The award will be presented in June at the ALA’s annual conference in Atlanta. Not in Front of the Children is just out in paperback and available from bookstores, online, or from Hill & Wang, 1-888-330-VHPS.
