World Press Freedom Day

Established in 1993, World Press Freedom Day — celebrated every May 3rd — commemorates the sacrifices of journalists who have been killed, imprisoned, or harassed for their courageous efforts to inform the public, and to remind all nations of their obligations (under Article XIX of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) to uphold press freedom.

According to The Committee to Protect Journalists, 47 journalists were killed in 2005, more than three-quarters of whom were murdered to silence their criticism or punish them for their work.

Learn more about international press freedom at worldpressfreedomday.org, and send a letter of protest to one of the world's leading jailers of journalists.
