10 Most Censored Countries
North Korea leads the list of the world's most censorious regimes, in a "dishonor roll" that includes Burma, Cuba, Libya, and Uzbekistan. Citizens in these countries are subject to an astounding degree of censorship, characterized in CPJ's findings by total state control of the media, aggressive and often brutal repression of all independent sources of information, and the use of media to develop bizarre cults of personality around dictatorial leaders.
For the full report, visit www.cpj.org/censored. In related news, Reporters Without Borders released its annual World Press Freedom Index, which notes the world's worst "black holes" for news. This year, the United States fell 20 places, to 44th overall, in its ranking for press freedom. |
