The Knight Foundation recently released an alarming report, The Future of the First Amendment in which they discovered:

- Nearly three-fourths of high school students either do not know how they feel about the First Amendment or admit they take it for granted;
- 75% erroneously think flag burning is illegal;
- Half believe the government can censor the Internet; and
- More than a third think the First Amendment goes too far in the rights it guarantees.

In order to fight this growing apathy and misinformation, we offer workshops about the First Amendment and censorship for schools and youth organizations.

The goals of workshops are to:

- To educate students about First Amendment and censorship
- To raise awareness of current youth free expression issues
- To empower students with information they can use within their school curricula or youth program activities
- To promote youth leadership and activism

We often bring in real examples of current cases and incidents of censorship affecting youth and use them as a springboard for discussion about the effects of silencing youth expression and what are better alternatives to censorship.

We can work with students all ages, but most of our work is best suited for middle school and high school students.

If you are interested in more information about having YFEN run a workshop in your community, school, library or youth organization please email Claire Karpen at ckarpen@ncac.org or call (212) 807-6222 ext 22.
