Updated 11/28/23 –Upon meeting with local students and media specialists, the Pinellas County Library Review Team returned The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison to school libraries.
2/9/23 – The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) has written a letter to the Pinellas County School Board in Largo, Florida regarding the district’s recent removal of the book The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison from school libraries.
NCAC is deeply concerned that the Associate Superintendent misinterpreted state guidance and improperly removed The Bluest Eye from school libraries and curriculum. District policy wisely recognizes that decisions about instructional and library material collection criteria are best made by committees that represent all stakeholders. The Associate Superintendent should not have ignored policy where state law did not require him to do so.
We urge the district to return the book to school libraries and to comply with district policy in all book challenge proceedings.
