Who is eligible?
Any young people, aged 14-18, who have a passion for free expression and who are attending a U.S. high school during the 2024-2025 school year.
Parental approval is required.
What is the length of the program?
The program’s duration is eight months (with August orientation) from August-April.
Is this program digital or in-person?
When you become a Student Advocate for Speech Leader, you’ll meet up with NCAC and your fellow Leaders virtually at least once a month.
Do I need any prior experience as an activist or student journalist?
No! Whether you’re already active in your local community or looking to get started, this program is for you! We’re looking for passionate students who want to be leaders in their communities!
How many hours per month are required to participate?
The Leadership program should require just a few hours a month to attend monthly 1 hour meetings, and participate in local and national advocacy events. For important dates, like Banned Books Week in September or Student Press Freedom Day in February, you may have to dedicate more time than usual to participate in local or national events or activities..
How much does it cost?

The National Coalition Against Censorship is a nonpolitical organization. Our vision is an American society that understands, values, defends, and vigorously exercises free expression in a just, egalitarian, diverse, and inclusive democracy.

When do applications open and close?
Applications for the 2024-2025 school year open on March 23, 2024. The deadline to apply is June 3, 2024
What are the application requirements?
Applicants must complete a form with a few short essay questions about free speech. Finalists will be invited to an interview with NCAC staff. Once admitted, parental permission and media consent forms are required.
