A Human Rights Watch study of abstinence-only-until-marriage programs in Texas documents the risks to young people from withholding life-saving HIV prevention information. Additionally, it found that these programs discriminate against gay and lesbian youth. The in-depth report recommends government support for comprehensive sex education to protect teens—health and their right to be free from discrimination based on sexual orientation. To combat abstinence-only programs, Lambda Legal Defense has produced an action-oriented toolkit Tell Me The (Whole) Truth: School Supplies to Get Real Sex Education. The kit, says Lambda, “provides you with the tools you need to make sure your district’s sex education is just that—education, not slogans and propaganda.” To order, email [email protected] or contact the Lambda Legal Defense. The toolkit is also available online at www.lambdalegal.org.
