NCAC Censorship News Issue #64:
Rib Lake High School in Wisconsin is in trouble again. Rib Lake is where censorship actions surrounding Judy Blume’s book Forever resulted in a costly judgment (Dishnow v. Rib Lake) against the district (Censorship News 62).
This time, a newly-hired uncertified library aide has filed a complaint asking the school district to cancel a subscription to Rolling Stone magazine. The aide had cut and blacked out words and pictures she found objectionable in Mademoiselle and Glamour magazines but was told by administrators to stop tampering with materials.
School administrators who had ignored their own policies when Forever was challenged, have appointed a review committee to consider the complaint and, in compliance with the court ruling, now say they will follow the district’s library materials selection policy to the letter.
