Who is eligible?
Any young people, aged 14-18, who have a passion for free expression and who are attending a U.S. high school during the 2023-2024 school year.
Required: Parental approval and a teacher advisor for the student club
When does the program begin and how long does it last?
The program will begin in June! During the summer months, NCAC will host virtual training sessions for you and your fellow SAS club leaders to provide you with advocacy training to start and lead your SAS club.
Is this program digital or in-person?
When you become a Student Advocate for Speech Leader, you’ll meet up with NCAC and your fellow leaders virtually at least once a month. However, the largest responsibility of being an SAS Leader will be working in-person in your school and community to establish and manage your local SAS club.
Do I need any prior experience as an activist or student journalist?
No! Whether you’re already active in your local community or looking to get started, this program is for you! We’re looking for passionate students who want to be leaders in their communities!
How many hours of week is the club?
Normally, the club should require just a few hours a week. For important dates, like Banned Books Week in October or Student Press Freedom Day in February, you may have to dedicate more time than usual to organizing events or activities for your club.
How much does it cost?
It’s free! In fact, NCAC will provide your club a small amount of funding as needed for special events or activities!
Where are the other Student Advocates for Speech clubs located?
Student Advocate for Speech clubs are all over the country! Right now we have clubs in Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, and Missouri.
Does NCAC have a political affiliation?
The National Coalition Against Censorship is a nonpolitical organization. Our vision is an American society that understands, values, defends, and vigorously exercises free expression in a just, egalitarian, diverse, and inclusive democracy.
My question isn’t answered here. Who should I get in touch with?
For any more questions, please reach out to NCAC’s Youth Free Expression Coordinator at [email protected]

Applications for the 2023-2024 school year closed on May 5, 2023. NCAC will begin to accept applications for the 2024-2025 school year spring of 2024.
What are the application requirements?
