Sherman Alexie is one of the most frequently challenged authors in America. Just this year, NCAC intervened in three separate challenges to Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, most recently in Idaho. In this new video, courtesy of our friends at Open Road Integrated Media in support of Banned Books Week 2014, Alexie discusses book banning, censorship, and the erotic novel to which one would-be book banner compared his young adult novel.
Honored last year at NCAC’s annual FREE SPEECH MATTERS celebration for his steadfast support of kids’ right to read, Sherman Alexie is the winner of the 2010 PEN/Faulkner Award, the 2007 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, the 2001 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and a Special Citation for the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Fiction.
