Issue 80, Winter 2000-2001

In honor of her 90th birthday, friends and colleagues of Lora Hays have contributed to a student internship at NCAC to help with our work to protect freedom of expression and to teach students all about First Amendment principles. Lora, an award-winning independent film editor and teacher of film at New York University, is the co-producer, with Chris Pelzer, of Tell It Like It Is!, NCAC’s video about censorship of children’s books. Lora’s passion for the First Amendment is not surprising: she is the daughter of Arthur Garfield Hays, who was a founder and General Counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union, and defense attorney with Clarence Darrow in the Scopes “monkey” trial in 1925.
