The sculpture, Holier Than Thou, provoked heated criticism that it is offensive to Catholics. Critics say the Bishop’s miter is overtly phallic and his expression too dour. A plaque on the sculpture, by Jerry Boyle, explains that the work reflects his childhood view of the priest at confession. The sculpture is on display at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. A federal court rejected an effort to have it removed, but the school board in Wichita voted to ban university recruiters from all Wichita public schools until the sculpture is removed.
