San Francisco's mass transit system, known as the BART, has faced widespread criticism for turning off mobile phone and Internet services provided within the subway to disrupt planned protests of a police shooting. The action has been compared to the actions of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt and may be the first time a civic authority in the US has restricted Internet access in response to political dissent.
