May 4, 2023: The EARN IT Act passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously. Senate leadership must now decide whether to move the bill to the Senate floor.
Several Senators, including Alex Padilla (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Jon Ossoff (GA), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Peter Welch (D-VT), expressed concerns about the bill during the markup. Senator Padilla entered the coalition’s letter into the record and specifically mentioned our concerns regarding the impact on the speech of marginalized communities, especially the LGBTQ+ community, and the effect on encrypted services, including people seeking or providing reproductive healthcare.
May 2, 2023: NCAC has joined the Center for Democracy & Technology and 132 LGBTQ+ and other human rights organizations in urging Congress to oppose the latest iteration of the flawed Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act (EARN IT Act), which threatens encryption and free speech while making it harder to protect children from online abuse.
