New bills written by the Florida Citizens Alliance (FLCA), whose goal is to inject “conservative values” into the state’s classrooms and libraries, threaten the right of students to receive a wide range of information that is currently available to them and to students in every other state. The FLCA was responsible for legislation that has made it significantly easier for any Florida citizen to burden school districts with curriculum challenges that weaken academic freedom, chill the work of educators, interfere with students’ rights to access information, and cost school districts time and money.
As reported by the Tampa Bay Times, the new bills have not yet been scheduled for committee hearings. However, concerned citizens should be prepared for the FLCA to continue to pressure legislators.
Together with partner organizations, we have drawn up the fact sheet below to explain the threats posed by these bills.
