National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) has delivered a letter to the Board of Regents at Texas A&M University System to express its concern regarding West Texas A&M President Walter Wendler’s decisions to cancel A Fool’s Drag Race and place a ban on all future campus drag performances.
According to Wendler, all drag shows are an assault on human dignity and “discriminate against womanhood” for the ways in which they incorporate exaggerated presentations of gender. Under the guise of “treating all people equally,” Wendler concludes that such performances should be prohibited on WTAM’s campus on his account that they are inherently misogynistic and constitute harassment.
Our letter encourages the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents to veto President Walter Wendler’s decision and make a statement assuring student groups that their constitutionally-protected rights to free expression are recognized across its network of universities.
