Several lawmakers in Arizona are opposing efforts to make sex education in the state more comprehensive and inclusive. In recent weeks, those lawmakers have called for bans on It’s Perfectly Normal, an illustrated guide to puberty and sexual health by Robie Harris and Michael Emberley, in the state’s schools and libraries. Thus far, the book appears safe on library shelves. One state representative went so far as to compare the book to content found on the website Pornhub.

The book has been frequently challenged since its first publication in 1994. The author and illustrator have repeatedly stated their belief in the need for comprehensive, medically-accurate information to be available to young people as they look for answers about their bodies and sexuality.

NCAC will continue to monitor the situation and update accordingly.
